Last December Google launched an applications web store for it’s Chrome browser and announced that usage of Chrome had grown from 40 million to 120 million. SlideRocket was fortunate to be one of 10 launch partners that participated in the event and was live on the Chrome Web Store from day one. It’s great having Google pave the way for web apps and like some other Chrome web store participants we wanted to share what this has meant to our business.
#1 Results - The SlideRocket app on the Chrome Web Store received over 50,000 installs in the first 10 days of availability and the volume hasn’t yet dropped off. As much as 60% of SlideRocket’s daily lead flow now comes from the Chrome Web Store.
#2 120 million+ Google Chrome users now have access to SlideRocket – Exposure to another 120M users is something that was very attractive to us and it’s not like we’re paying for a list rental. It’s virtually free access to 120M potential web app users and that number is growing.
#3 Those 120M users are 1 click away from making great SlideRocket presentations – One of the best parts of the Chrome Web Store is the ease of access to our app. We now have a one-click install for SlideRocket which includes user account provisioning and installation of our icon in the Chrome app tab. This lowers many of the common barriers to entry that often have users saying “no thanks” or “too hard”.
#4 Once Installed SlideRocket’s app and brand is resident in the App tab – Apart from having the SlideRocket app sitting in a users app tab ready to be run in one click (see #5) our app is now sitting next to some other big brands like the NY Times, Sports Illustrated, Amazon.com, Google, Marvel, Autodesk, USA Today, Google etc. That’s some pretty nice brand company to be keeping. We don’t know anywhere else we can get that kind of brand association at least not at zero cost.
#5 One click logs you back in to SlideRocket – Once SlideRocket is installed users can simply click on the SlideRocket icon in the app tab to sign in to SlideRocket. We love this kind of immediacy for our users. They think about using SlideRocket, they click our icon, they’re making great presentations.
#6 Small investment – It took one SlideRocket engineer less than a week to adapt our application for Chrome. The fundamental integration points were account provisioning and single sign-on using Google Apps and Google Account Id’s. We gauge this as a low cost and high return investment in time with no costs beyond the labor of integration. Magic.
#7 Feedback from store users – Not only did we broaden our reach using the Google Chrome Web Store but we opened up another channel for feedback and ratings via our web store profile. We get very honest feedback which is instructive in terms of what we’re doing right and wrong and let’s us know how to better set expectations for users or make necessary changes.
#8 Getting Noticed – One of our core objectives in entering the Chrome Web Store was raising awareness about SlideRocket so it certainly helped to be included on the web store home page in the feature and popular sections and also listed in the Staff picks. Google also offers banner placements across the site that lead visitors back to your profile. Of course it doesn’t hurt for you to build a Google Chrome landing page and engage your own marketing machine to let folks know about your Google Chrome App.
#9 Google likes co-opetition and diversity – Despite the fact that Google has a presentation application of it’s own it welcomed SlideRocket with open arms. We’d like to think this is because they want to offer their users the best web apps available (*wink*) but our initial concerns about the marketplace being closed or tightly controlled were unfounded.
#10 The revenue share is only 5% – With all of the benefits in points 1-9 we feel like sharing 5% of our revenue with Google is a small price to pay. Compared to the other marketplaces and apps stores which usually charge between 20% and 25%, this is kind of a bargain.
Overall the Google Chrome Web Store has introduced millions of users to a new way to create, collaborate and communicate with SlideRocket’s stunning presentation software and we couldn’t be happier. Visit the Chrome Web Store to install SlideRocket via Chrome and find out for yourself how easy it is to reinvent your presentations with SlideRocket and stand out from the crowd.
