Maggie- You are a gifted writer. You grabbed my attention with your title, you engaged my senses with your imagery and you wove valuable information into a succinct story. Kudos to you! Thank you for the reminder to keep the back-pack light.

Good point, Jeri. I definitely agree- if you can't say the main point of your speech in a short sentence, it's going to be impossible for you to do so in the speech itself. It's important to establish that main point before you delve too deep into the process of crafting your presentation as well.

A start to accomplishing what you suggest is to give your speech a title, like a movie title. What does the title of a movie have to do with a speech? I tell my students that if you can't tell me in a title what your speech is about, then you can't tell me what your speech is about in twenty minutes either. The title helps you narrow your subject. "A Study of the Career of Beyonce" does not. Beyonce's Talent does. Show me specifically the path you will take and sum it up with the title. This title is not shared with your audience. This title is for your benefit.
